Kolea at Waikoloa Beach Resort is an excellent choice for a prolonged stay on the Big Island. It has ample amenities, including a pool, hot tub, private beach cove, and several shops and restaurants within walking distance.

Travelers may well stay near the resort for the entire duration of their stay and always have a new thrilling activity to occupy their day.

Spend one day snorkeling at the ocean’s edge and encounter colorful schools of fish. Sometimes your condo host will provide a plethora of snorkeling supplies, but should you prefer to come prepared with your own, follow this link for affordable gear. It is important to have protection for your feet as the ocean floor is often rocky.

If you prefer a less physically demanding pastime, simply recline on one of the many beach chairs and watch as sea turtles scuttle on the shore and chance flashes of dolphin fins appear over the horizon. Binoculars will allow you to view these beautiful creatures with precision while still allowing them the required space to thrive.

If you’d like a more intimate experience with dolphins, travel five minutes down Waikoloa Beach Road and schedule a special encounter at the Hilton Hotel. There you will be able to meet several friendly, eager dolphins. You can pet their tummies, ride along on their sides, and learn about their unique, vibrant personalities.

Free hula shows are intermittently hosted at the local shopping squares. Enjoy a night of beautiful dance and music at the Kings’ Shops Waikoloa while also indulging in local delicacies at surrounding eateries. We especially enjoyed Tommy Bahama, which had an array of delicious seafood dishes and significantly discounted appetizers and drinks from 3-5pm every day.

A cherished detail of our trip was our frequent encounters with wildlife. Wild goats populate the surrounding landscape, often traveling in groups. Babies toddle behind beautiful adults, each sporting a unique coat. Often, their fur is some variation of darker colors, allowing them to blend seamlessly with dark volcanic rock.

Mongooses weave through bushes, and tall white egrets pace street medians gracefully. Nēnēs favor ponds which are luckily plentiful surrounding the Waikoloa Beach Resort property. Feral cats punctuate the landscape, often lounging amidst heaps of volcanic rock. Some are friendly and will approach passerbys. Others meow plaintively for food.

Over the course of our trip, we found ourselves pining for a camera that could capture our memories. Using our phones distracted us and took us out of each beautiful moment. An alternative option may be to bring along a disposable camera or perhaps an instax or polaroid model, which prints your photo moments after you take it.
