Our experience in Poipu (Kauai's south side):

Learn about our wonderful adventure on Kauai's south side and discover tips for your own magical visit to the island.

We stayed in a stunning condo in the Nihi Kai complex. The vibrant community has a sprawling ocean view, beautiful gardens, a tennis court, and an ocean-view pool. The sparkling ocean and Haupu mountain range were both visible from the unit.

Our dwelling was roomy, clean, and outfitted with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Among the provided amenities were a washer and dryer. Air conditioning was available, but floor-to-ceiling windows and screen doors provided cool breezes as well as stunning views.

The expansive lanai was a cozy environment from which to observe the sunset. Hawaiian sunsets are spectacular; lush color blends seamlessly in the vast sky. If you’re very lucky, you may encounter the “green flash” - a rare phenomenon in which a green hue fills the sky as the sun sinks below the horizon.

In January, we often saw whales spouting off the coast and, occasionally, schools of dolphins breaking through the waves. Year-round, beautiful birds, including spotted doves, mynahs and red crested cardinals, regularly visit.

The lanai became a welcomed oasis during our travels. We’d enjoy a glass of wine, a good book, and the sound of gentle rainfall. One night, as my wife and I lounged on the plush patio chairs, we happened upon a rare sight. For a time, the sun and moon shared the sky, the former sinking as the latter rose. Their light combined was so absolute that my camera lens struggled to capture the sheer immensity.

Bringing along a pair of binoculars will allow you to thoroughly appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Some affordable, user-friendly cameras will allow you to capture and retain countless scenic memories.
